Airborne is a technology leader in the design, manufacturing, automation and industrialization of advanced composite materials, thus enabling our clients to be more competitive by radically reducing costs and saving time. After the spin-off of our ‘Airborne Oil and Gas’ business Airborne International started in 2014.

We saw the need for solutions to make composites significantly more affordable and this has become even more pressing throughout the industry. We want to become the market standard in composite industrialization solutions, based on a digital platform. In fact, we will build on our core know-how of composite manufacturing, where Airborne enables advanced composite manufacturing as a service.

This is based on a platform with the Airborne toolbox of digital twin engines and automation building blocks, which can help customers develop much faster with significant benefits in term of efficiency and effectiveness. Through data, we are able to model, predict and improve the production process.

Digital production is our key to the future, unlocking the potential for advanced composites production anywhere. High-end composites for the masses. That’s what we work on.

Airborne works for several markets: Space, Aeronautics, Marine and Services (MRO).

Space

For Space we are market leader in solar-array substrate panels for European satellites. We are very proud to be part of satellites such as Sentinel 1 and 2, EarthCare, Galileo FOC, EDRS- C and Astrobus. But we are also working on some 50 more, including Jason-CS / Sentinel 6, JUICE and MetOp-SG. To this date we delivered more than 200 sandwich panels for satellites.

Aeronautics

In the Aeronautics sector we develop and install automated composite manufacturing cells for the production of small to medium sized composite aerospace parts enabling our customers to reduce cost and lead times.  Our concept is based on off the shelve robotics using interchangeable end effectors resulting in a low CAPEX, high flexible, modular solutions. All developed automated solutions are implemented in our own composite facilities and will be implemented at our customers based on “Prove and Move”  principles.

Marine

Airborne Maritime (AEL) combines Design & Engineering with industrialized manufacturing and in-house R&D which is a strong enabler in the world of high-end composites. We believe that knowing what we design and how to make it gives a real understanding of both the possibilities and challenges of composite designs and that this is the best way to optimize and improve.

Services (MRO)

Airborne Services is specializing in the maintenance, repair and modification of composite aircraft components with a focus on helicopter rotor blades for both military as well as civil operators and OEM’s. We focus on short turnaround times and reduced costs for our clients.

Composites manufacturers: are you making the best of your brownfield situation?

november 8, 2018

high tech bedrijven airborne 181108

It must be frustrating: having decades of experience and knowledge producing composites parts with existing production lines, but watching a newcomer walk away with the order because they can produce faster and cheaper with their brand new production line. You know automation is the way to go, but investment costs are putting you off. How to fight this ramp-up war and win this battle? Read more

The need for speed: why the composites industry should radically change. Now.

november 3, 2018

high tech bedrijven airborne 181103

In my first blog I talked about the conversion costs of composites in Aerospace: why these are still way too high and why that is a problem. It was interesting to see how this message was received and how people responded. Of course, the subject was inspired by the Farnborough International Airshow at the time, but the key message is that we have been enhancing the product performance regardless of affordability. Read more

Composite manufacturing: fast food or chef’s cuisine?

oktober 25, 2018

high tech bedrijven airborne 181025

The challenge of composite manufacturing is to become more efficient and scale up to high volume applications. If we take an analogy with food, it may sound logical to think of fast food: standardised, mass production, constant quality. But actually, we should think much more as a master chef and follow his or her way of cooking. It may sound counter-intuitive, but I’ll explain you why.  Read more

Why I am worried about the commercial aircraft market (and you should be too)

oktober 20, 2018

high tech bedrijven airborne 181020

Imagine 1 out of 3 passengers being unable to travel by air due to a shortage of aircraft. Air travel pricing will skyrocket and business cases will take huge hits. Unfortunately, this scenario is on the verge of reality. The amount of air passengers is estimated to nearly double to 7.8 billion by 2036. This means that approximately 40,000 new aircraft have to be built in the next two decades. Ask yourself: are you ready to double or even triple your current production rate in the next five years? Back to the Future: why the Space Sector needs a ‘New Space-race’!

high tech bedrijven airborne 181016

Last week the international space sector gathered at the 69th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Bremen. For perspective, IAC is the world’s premier space event. And this year’s theme ‘Involving Everyone’ was spot on. Why? Because in practice the opposite is true: despite all the attention for New “Astropreneurial” Space it is still Old “Governmental” Space calling the shots over the next decade.  Read more

Why conversion costs of composites in Aerospace are still way too high

juli 24, 2018

high tech bedrijven airborne 180724

This week we, Airborne, will join the Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) 2018 again. Our theme this year is “Shaping the aerospace value chain of tomorrow”. For those of you who are familiar with our story, at Airborne we firmly believe in automating the composite production as key to reduce costs and time to market. But because of all protocols, automating the total production process of an airplane today just isn’t possible. Or is it? Read further [Source: linkedIN.com]

Think that manually manufacturing composites is hard? Think again. I recently tried it with my daughter in our very own kitchen. All you need are two hands, a baking mold and an average oven. This simple manufacturing process has always been one of the main attractions of composite. But it has now become its biggest problem. Let me show you why.
