01/09/12 Eight Years Opportunity: Mars Rover Finds Signs of Water
In the eighth year of its Mars expedition, the Mars rover Opportunity has found evidence that water once existed on Mars. According to briefings by NASA, in late 2011 the rover found a vein of a notably light colored mineral - apparently gypsum - deposited by flowing water. For scientists, the gypsum deposits found by Opportunity on Mars are a sensation. They are convinced that the discovery proves that water once flowed at this site.

maxon motor benelux, founded in 1912 as Technisch Bureau Sanders Birnie, celebrates her 100th anniversary this year. In the history of the company, the central theme has always been ‘high-tech’ and for the last few decennia the accent has been on precision drive systems. This has produced continued growth for maxon motor – 2011 was the best year ever – and the company now has 27 employees. In the last few years, maxon motor benelux has been moving further up in the high-tech manufacturing chain, according to Gerwin Geukes, director of maxon motor benelux. The company has moved, in many cases, from being a component supplier to being a partner in complex development projects.

The maxon motor Group posted record results in fiscal 2010. Following the tough economic environment in 2009, maxon quickly recovered and made significant progress, with consolidated sales totaling CHF 306.6 million (up 23.6% on 2009). With cash flow (operating profit plus write-offs) of CHF 40.8 million (13.3% of consolidated sales), the company was able to fund all investment from its own resources. At year-end 2010, the company employed around 1,850 staff (174 more than in 2009), of which some 1,050 are based in Sachseln. More than 80% of production is exported. The company has production facilities in Sachseln, Sexau (Germany) and Veszprém (Hungary). maxon has a continuous innovation capacity and a well-stocked product pipeline.
