01/12/12 FEI collaborates with NIH to create new 'Living Lab' for structural biology research

FEI has entered into a Cooperative Research And Development Agreement (CRADA) with the National Institutes of Health (NIH), creating a "Living Lab Structural Biology Center" to promote structural biology research through the integration of cryo-electron microscopy (EM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) which may accelerate important medical discoveries relating to global health challenges such as HIV/AIDS and cancer.

01/10/12 FEI Launches new core-to-pore imaging workflow for shale gas reservoirs

FEI's Natural Resources Business Unit announced today a "core-to-pore" petrography workflow for core analysis of unconventional gas reservoirs in the oil and gas industry. The workflow includes a new automated, large-scale, high-resolution imaging method for viewing and analyzing petrographic data sets with length scales ranging from centimeters to nanometers. FEI today announced that it has acquired ASPEX Corporation of Delmont, PA. ASPEX provides rugged scanning electron microscopes (SEM’s) and related services for environmentally demanding military, industrial and factory floor applications. "The ASPEX EXtreme™ SEM is an integral part of our QEMSCAN® WellSite™ solution for on-site oil and gas solutions," noted Don Kania, president and CEO of FEI. MAPS software combines the advantages of both light and electron microscopy for cellular biology research


FEI today announced a new correlative workflow solution for research scientists. FEI's MAPS (Modular Automated Processing System) provides a fast and efficient correlative workflow that enables researchers to see both large scale context and small scale detail in one overview. The first application of the MAPS software is for cell biologists, where the system's capabilities improve the typical workflow in a cell biology microscopy laboratory.

11/14/11 FEI buys TILL Photonics

FEI today announced that it has acquired TILL Photonics of Munich, Germany. TILL provides sophisticated, high resolution, digital light microscopes and high speed imaging systems for live cell fluorescence microscopy. "The Life Sciences market is a key growth opportunity for FEI," noted Don Kania, president and CEO of FEI. "With this acquisition, FEI acquires additional key technology for correlative microscopy for cellular biology, which integrates high performance light and electron microscopy. Now we can accelerate the growth of our Life Sciences business, which is an important component of our company-wide plan to double our served available market in the next three years."

10/28/11 FEI reports record earnings and $50 million share repurchase

For the third quarter of 2011, FEI Company has reported record earnings for the fourth consecutive quarter. Revenue was the highest of any third quarter and the second-highest quarterly total ever.Don Kania, president and CEO of FEI.: "We had another very good quarter, with earnings again at the highest level in our history. Bookings remained strong with double-digit sequential growth in the Life Sciences and Research and Industry business units, offsetting weakness in Electronics. For the fourth quarter, we expect sequential revenue growth which should yield annual growth of approximately 30% for 2011 over 2010."
